Blood orange and blueberry sangria is a simple party drink made with fruit, sauvignon blanc and vodka. It is easy to put together, and makes for a pretty display, too!
I’ve never bought a blood orange before this recipe.
It’s kinda weird to think how many different varieties of produce there are, like purple cauliflower, purple sweet potatoes, practically 500 different types of greens. I always wondered if they actually tasted different or if they were bred purely for the enjoyment of food photographers.
But blood oranges actually do taste a little different! Besides their beautiful color—which I found varied from fruit to fruit, which was kinda cool—they taste much less citrusy. They almost had a berry flavor to them, which made them a perfect pair with wild blueberries for this delicious white sangria!
I’m not sure if it’s still accurate to call it white sangria, since it is obviously colored, but it’s made with white wine so I’m gonna go with it. Blood orange and blueberry sangria was a spur-of-the-moment (adult) drink choice for Brooklyn’s first birthday party. That might sound a little strange, but really her first birthday was more a party for us as parents than it was for her. She had a pretty tutu, lots of people to fawn over her, and a delicious smash cake. Mom and Dad got a keg and sangria. Sounds fair, right? 🙂
Really though, it was a first birthday but it was also the most adult party I’ve ever thrown. All my serving dishes matched. There was a full buffet of food. I had the house completely clean. AND I made a pretty party drink! I must say, I was kinda proud.
My one mistake—as a true Type A personality would have it—was committing to throwing a giant party for 45+ people and then also making and photographing a sangria two hours before everyone arrived. You can bet that my ‘I can do it all’ attitude had me ready for a cocktail. Thankfully luck was on my side and the drink tasted amazing! Though you know I’d drink it even if it didn’t, we can’t waste that much wine. It’s practically a crime.
