WIAW: green smoothie delight

I’ve been meaning to try one of these green smoothies for a while, and today seems like the perfect day to tell you all about it my first experience! I think the green smoothie can fall under the ‘sensible snacking’ category as well. There are lots of days where my lunch or breakfast isn’t a huge meal, and my snacks help keep me going through the day. A green smoothie would be a great snack between meals to do just that. But before we get to the main feature of WIAW, let’s recap starting with dinner last night.

Last night’s dinner was a repeat of just a few days ago. Kyle had a roasted potato craving, so I whipped up another batch of roasted broccoli and red potatoes. They were seasoned almost the same way, with EVOO, salt, pepper, garlic salt, basil, oregano, and cumin. The only difference was I added a few shakes of lemon juice to the mix.

The chicken I marinated with lemon juice, dill, garlic salt, pepper, and thyme, with a little EVOO drizzled on top. They were cooked in a skillet with chicken broth.
Some of my other snack yesterday included a blueberry muffin Larabar. Which amazed me yet again at how closely they resemble the taste of the actual muffin!
I also happened to finish off a jar of peanut butter while I was making a yummy protein snack I will be sharing soon!

My First Green Smoothie

For the longest time, the thought of putting spinach into a protein shake or smoothie kind of weirded me out. But this morning, I finally decided to try my hand at one. I mean, green is my favorite color, so it can’t really be that bad! And I was right, because it was delicious!
In my smoothie, I added the following:
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2/3 frozen banana (the rest didn’t fit in the magic bullet)
  • 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of milled flaxseed
  • 1 scoop of strawberry flavored whey protein powder
There wasn’t too much of a spinach taste in it, and the banana flavor was pretty prominent, which I like. I could taste the strawberry protein powder too. I think this combo would be good with any flavor of protein powder.

This smoothie was surprisingly filling. Which makes it a good breakfast option when I’ve got a busy morning, like I do today.
And since my morning is so busy, and I have lots to get done in the lab today, I’ll fill you in on my workout later on! Happy Wednesday!
